This colorful collection of Indonesian masks, based on those of actual costumes, introduces youngsters and papercraft enthusiasts to an intriguing aspect of the cultural life of people living in this Southeast Asian island group.
Simple instructions and easy-to-follow diagrams make it easy to create six accurate reproductions of traditional masks with religious, folk and theatrical origins. Among them are three Wayang Topeng masks used in Javanese theatrical productions, a boar mask and a Rangda (witch) mask of Bali and a Dayak bird mask of Borneo. To use, simply cut the mask out, glue on facial parts, then add string or a rubber band to hold it in place. An introduction sketches the origin and cultural significance of the masks.
Perfect as classroom teaching aids to stimulate interest in ethnic diversity and multiculturalism, these colorful masks also make exotic conversation pieces and unique cover-ups for costume parties, Halloween and other events.
