Germany developed the CL class (Light C-Class) of multipurpose aircraft as escort fighter, and as a ground- attack fighter-bomber. Escort fighters were organized as Schutz Staffeln, or Schustas as escorted the larger B- and C-class two-seaters to protect them from the more manueverable Allied single-seat fighters. Fighter-bombers were organized into Schlacht Staffeln, or Schlastas and were used to maintain contact with German ground troops and to attack Allied ground troops.
There were a variety of the these two-seater aircraft of the B-, C- and CL- classes. Other manufacturers included Albatross, Rumpler, AEG, Roland Aviatik, and AGO.
