Germany produced 100 A7V chassis and completed only 20 of them as tanks or Sturmpanzer. The other 80 were completed as unarmored cargo carriers, or Gelaendewagen. The armoured superstructures were bolted on and were on occasion switched from one chassis to another. The vehicle number stayed with the chassis, regardless of the superstructure fitted to it. Variations in the number of armored plates, number of bolts holding the plates to the frame, mudguards, gun mounts, etc, combine to make each vehicle unique.
