After the battle for Stalingrad the general-inspector of tank forces of Wermacht H.Guderian has suggested to design the large caliber mortar on tanks chassis, intended for conducting fights in cities and destruction of fortifications. Hitler enjoyed this idea and on August, 5th, 1943 he disposed to develop self-propelled mortar with 380-mm antisubmarine jet mortar based on Tiger tank. It was planned to make a 10 machines per month at first but really it was finished as production (to be exact to alteration from linear tanks) of 18 machines by Alkett firm from August, 1944 till January, 1945 at the end. They have received official designation Sturmmorserwagen 606/4 mit 38 cm RW 61, however are more known as Sturmtiger.
Self-propelled mortar was a chassis of tank Pz. VI (H) Tiger with a quadrangular armored cabin (thickness of the reservation ? a forehead of 150 mm, boards and forages of 80 mm, a roof of 40 mm) in it forward part. 380 mm jet mortar Raketenwerfer 61 was installed in a frontal sheet of cabin. It could fire by demolition and cumulative shells 345 kg weight on range up to 5 kilometers. Its ammunition was 15 missiles; it had a rectangular hatch in a roof of cabin and the special crane for its loading. The fool weight in fighting position was 66 t.
At first all Sturmtigers arrived to 500-th independent heavy spare tank battalion (Pz. Ersatz-Abt.500) which was generated on October, 20th, 1944. Later (in August, 1944) at least one machine was used to bombardment of the risen Warsaw where it has been embodied on frames of a newsreel. In October, 1944 three companies of Sturmtigers (1000, 1001 and 1002 assault mortars companies ? Pz. Stu. Mr. Kp.) were generated and sent on the Western front. At March, 26th, 1945 in Wermacht sides still were registered 13 Sturmtigers and 3 machines were in depots.
