The G.I prototype first flew in January 1915, but was difficult to fly. Lacking in structural integrity, underpowered design, and was also dangerous in the the event of a crash landing. Nevertheless, the Idfieg issues a contract for series production to Gothaer Waggonfabrik AG, which acquired a license from Ursinus. Gothaer's cheif engineer Han Burkhard simplified and refined the design, which was originally known as the "Gotha-Ursinus-Heeresflugzeug", or "GUH". The aircraft was later known as simply as the Gotha G. I or Gotha-Ursinus G.I, The first production aircraft was completed iin late July 1915. These aircrafts were powered by two 150 hp Benz. Bz. III engines. Before ceasing production in late 1915, Gothaer Waggonfabrik had built about 20 of the Gotha G.I
