The USS Lexington (CV-2) was damaged at the Battle of the Coral Sea by Japanese torpedo-bombers from carriers Shokaku and Zuikaku. Following major explosions, when the fires could not be controlled, the ship was abandoned. It was finally scuttled at 2000 on 8 May 42 by destroyer Phelps.
